New Marine Rescue and Educational Center to be built in Gales Point

By Benjamin Flowers: The Government of Belize (GOB) is partnering with the Clearwater Marine Aquarium Research Institute of Belize for the development of the Belize Marine Rescue & Educational Center, which will be located in Gales Point, Stann Creek.

GOB announced the collaboration on Thursday, noting that the development of the center is a coordinated effort which includes the Ministry of Tourism and Diaspora Relations (MTDR), Ministry of Blue Economy and Civil Aviation, in particular the Department of Fisheries, the Ministry of Natural Resources, Petroleum and Mining and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology.

“The partnership will see the development of a state of the art rehabilitation facility catering to manatees, turtles and other marine species. The center will be the first of its kind in Belize and has been the lifelong dream of Jamal Galves, Belize Program Coordinator, Clearwater Marine Aquarium Institute of Belize,” GOB said.

GOB added that the center will include an educational facility which will allow an immersive learning experience, highlighting the importance of sustainable tourism initiatives and the protection of Marine Wildlife in Belize. GOB also expects that the facility will play a major role in the development of Gales Point as a sustainable tourism destination.

The official press launch of the initiative is scheduled for Tuesday, April 11 in Belmopan.
