By Rubén Morales Iglesias: International reports say Lionel Messi is heading to Inter Miami after leaving Paris St-Germain. The Argentine superstar, who won the World Cup with his country this year, turned down a monstrous offer from Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal. Messi reportedly wanted to rejoin Barcelona but the club’s financial woes and La Liga’s Financial Fair Play regulations seem to have gotten in the way. Instead, he will be joining the Miami-based MLS club in a deal that involves partnerships with Adidas and Apple.
Messi, 35, is a seven-time Ballon d’Or winner and is likely to claim the award again this year. He will play in North America for the first time after spending his entire career in Europe.
Messi spent 21 years at Barcelona, where he became their all-time top scorer and won 35 trophies. He moved to PSG last year after Barca could not afford to keep him due to financial problems. He helped PSG win two consecutive Ligue 1 titles but failed to deliver the Champions League glory they craved. He scored 32 goals in 75 appearances for the French giants – and finished this season with 16 goals and 16 assists in the league.
Barcelona are out of the picture because of the financial situation, though Messi’s father Jorge said his son wanted to return to his old club and that he was even willing to play for free. But things seem not to have worked out.
Of the two viable options, Inter Miami or Al-Hilal, Messi has reportedly chosen Inter Miami. Many fans had been expecting Messi to go the Saudi Arabian way where he would join Cristiano Ronaldo who’s been playing at Al Nassr and Karim Benzema who just left Real Madrid for champions Al Ittihad. But, from way back, Messi had insinuated that he would love to live and play in the United States. David Beckham seems to have had the right offer. And he already owns a building in Miami.
