World Food Safety Day: ‘Food standards save lives’

Posted: Wednesday, June 7, 2023. 10:49 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today is being observed around the globe as World Food Safety Day.

The day is being celebrated under the theme, “Food Standards save lives”.

The Ministry of Health and Wellness notes that this day is an opportunity to inspire action to help prevent, detect and manage foodborne risks.

Safe food allows for the uptake of nutrients and it is directly linked to several of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Data from the World Health Organization shows that over 1 million people around the world get sick due to unsafe food in one day, on average.

Most foodborne diseases like gastroenteritis; an infection with symptoms such as watery diarrhea and stomach cramps, is preventable with proper food handling and hygiene.

The Ministry of Health and Wellness reminds all Belizeans that we all play a role in maintaining food safety from farm to fork.

“Food safety is everyone’s business,” the Ministry urged.
