By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Nicaragua are the leaders of the Under 19 Central American Women’s Volleyball Championship being played in Belize City, but could be moved aside by defending champions Costa Rica on Wednesday.

The Nicaraguans have accumulated 13 points from three games. They defeated Guatemala and El Salvador 3-1 earning four points from each win. Then on Tuesday they collected five more from their 3-0 triumph over Panama.

Costa Rica moved up to second place displacing inactive Belize and could very well knock off Nicaragua from the top spot should they beat them in the first game today. The Ticas now have nine points from two consecutive wins: a 3-1 triumph over Belize and a 3-0 rout of Honduras.

A 3-0 win over Nicaragua would give them five points and push them up to 14, one more than Nicaragua. A 3-1 win would give them four points, but Nicaragua would earn one and still retain the top spot at 14 to 13. Any other result favours Nicaragua. At least for now. That’s because Costa Rica have one game less. When the number of games even out, we’ll know better.

Despite having their rest day, Belize are in third place with six points; five from their 3-0 win over Panama and one point from the 3-1 loss to Costa Rica.

El Salvador also have six points but are in fourth place having won one game but lost two after dropping Tuesday’s game to Guatemala.

The Guatemalans bounced back with that win after losing on Opening Day to Nicaragua. Their five points place them in fifth place.

Panama, with a 1-2 record, also have five points but find themselves in sixth place having played one more game than the Guatemalans.

Honduras are at the bottom with one solitary point after three losses in a row. They will more than likely stay there after their encounter with home standing Belize on Wednesday night.
