Guns busted at Customs had no serial numbers, broker questioned

By Aaron Humes: The Customs broker who handled the arrival of a package that turned out to contain four high-powered guns and more than 800 live rounds of ammunition was questioned by Police but released as there was limited evidence, Commissioner of Police Chester Williams reported today.

On Thursday morning around 9:30 Police and Customs officials discovered a carton box shipped through a local shipping agency from a reported address in Miami, Florida, to a local address in Belize City. Recovered were an AK-47 7.62 caliber and three nine-millimeter pistols and 7.62 and nine-millimeter live rounds of ammunition.

Commissioner Williams said the guns did not have serial numbers on them; they were filed off.

Questions arise as to how to intercept such illicit shipments and the Commissioner said he would consult with Customs authorities about having two police officers formally assigned to the Port of Belize – likely from the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) and GI-3 Unit – as Belize is surprisingly the only Port in the region with no police officers on regular duty.

Investigations into the incident continue.
