PEACE Movement renews Redistricting Case in High Court

Posted: Tuesday, October 17, 2023. 8:00 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The Belize PEACE Movement has announced that on October 3, the claimants in High Court Case 55 of 2019 applied for enforcement of the Consent Order which they say has been breached by the Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC).

The proposal submitted by the Commission to the National Assembly in pursuance of the Order made last year is, according to the Movement, not in compliance with the Constitutional requirement to make the voting population in electoral division nearly equal as possible in number of voters. The deviation thresholds were well below Belizean and international standards, ranging from 25 to 35 percent, and with general dissatisfaction the proposal was indefinitely deferred by the House of Representatives when it met in August.

Now, as Belize moves into its next electoral cycle, the current distribution of registered voters in the 31 constituencies is unchanged (apart from transfers in and out of divisions).

The Movement wants the court to declare this to be so, and an injunction to restrain the Commission from proceeding with the current voters to conduct any general election, as well as an order of the court to compel more Constitutionally compliant proposals to the National Assembly.

No date has been set for any hearing.
