Wagiya vs Port Layola: 2nd Premier League of Belize game postponed due to referee unavailability for midweek game

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Premier League of Belize (PLB) match between Wagiya and Port Layola scheduled for Wednesday became the second game in two days that had to be postponed due to the lack of referees. The night before the PLB had to call off the match between Altitude and the San Pedro Pirates for the same reason, albeit it that San Pedro requested the postponement for a lack of players.

Both the Football Federation of Belize’s Referees Department and the San Pedro Pirates said they did not have enough referees and players available. Both said that due to referees and players having full-time jobs outside the football world, they did not have enough personnel.

“Since the majority of the referees work late hours and I find it very difficult to find referees for the back match between Altitude FC and San Pedro Pirates FC … the Referee Committee and the referee department request that the back matches be played on a later date when the referees can try to make themselves available,” said Head of the Referees Department Eugene Contreras in an email letter to the PLB General Manager Wilhelm Miguel. Though he did not mention the Wagiya-Port Layola game directly, the match had to be called off for the same reason.

The third backmatch between Benque Viejo United and Progresso was played in Benque Viejo del Carmen on Wednesday night.

The PLB has now rescheduled the two matches for next week.
