Dr. Barnett: $150 twice-monthly payment for those affected

Posted: Wednesday, March 25, 2020. 5:15 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Amid a grim economic outlook, Senator Dr. Carla Barnett announced that a payment of $150 twice per month will be made as part of the economic relief plan.

This, she said, is not intended nor expected to replace lost income, but to provide an ease.

The money will be routed through the Social Security Board and applications will be available online at the special COVID-19 website, the Government website and in hard copy at SSB offices.

First to be targeted are those in the tourism industry and allied services.

Barnett said the process will minimize direct contact as much as possible. Monies would be deposited in a bank account or for those without one, on a debit card through Heritage Bank or Holy Redeemer Credit Union and its fellow credit unions, according to Coye.

She presented statistics that indicated there could be no less than a 4 percent contraction in economic growth and possibly as much as ten percent contraction due to heavy losses of jobs at the free zone and elsewhere.

But Coye says it is not the end of the world as industries such as banana production remain in demand.
