Guatemalans to elect new President tomorrow

Posted: Saturday, June 15, 2019. 1:28 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Tomorrow, Guatemalans will go to the polls to elect a new President and congress.

If no candidate wins a majority in the first round, a second round of presidential elections will be held on August 11, 2019.

The constitution of the Republic of Guatemala prohibits incumbent President, Jimmy Morales from running for a 2nd – 4 year term.

The members of the congress are elected by two methods.

One-hundred and thirty are elected from 22 multi-member constituencies based on the departments, with the remaining 31 elected from a single nationwide constituency.

Presidential candidate Sandra Torres, who claims part-Belizean heritage and is the sister of stalwart PUP supporter Narda Garcia, has been leading in some polls.

Torres has also faced a legal challenge by the Guatemalan courts over potential campaign finance violations.

Sources told BBN that Torres’ Belizean family is also in Guatemala supporting her in her bid to be the next President of Guatemala.

Torres’ running mate is former Foreign Minister Carlos Raul Morales.
