Highlighting Belizean Women; Meet Marley Goodin

Posted: Wednesday, September 25, 2019. 1:52 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Jamaican singer and songwriter, Robert Nesta Marley once asked if any good could have come out of Trench Town.

Just across the Caribbean Sea from Trench Town in Jamaica is Punta Gorda, a town in the southern district of Toledo.

Marley Ack-Goodin, a proud and enthusiastic Belizean woman is a proud product of that community.

Today at 28 years old, Goodin is a role model for young women in Belize.

Marley is a humanitarian, globe trotter, academic, entrepreneur, and politician’s wife.

Her humanitarian efforts intensified about two years ago following the Zika outbreak.

After volunteering with the Belize Red Cross she secured an opportunity as Project Manager for the “Caribbean Zika Prevention and Response Project.”

This project additionally covers all vector borne illnesses.

Since her employment at the Belize Red Cross, Goodin has undergone numerous trainings locally, regionally, and internationally.

She has also co-authored a paper on Zika which was presented at the 64th Annual Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) conference in Port of Spain, Trinidad. This paper was subsequently published by the West Indian Medical Journal earlier this year.

But before Goodin’s humanitarian endeavors,  she worked with the Government of Belize.

She had served as the Head of Department for Nutrition at the Ministry of Health in Toledo.

As Marley prepares to start her graduate studies, we note that she obtained a Bachelor’s and Associate’s Degree in Biology at the University of Belize (UB).

During her time at UB she was granted the opportunity to conduct an independent research at Wellesley College (Hilary Clinton’s Alma Mater) in Massachusetts titled,” High Light Stress Tolerance on Arabidopsis thaliana & Mutant plants.” That research was 75 pages long.

Prior to her tertiary studies, Goodin graduated Toledo Technical College with 9 CXC passes and before that completed St. Peter Claver Primary School as Salutatorian and one of the top 25 PSE students countrywide.

In 2016, Goodin founded, “Purple Rain,” a social media space, to support women who were victims of domestic abuse.

She had also launched, “Let’s Get Physical,” another social media space for Belizeans to share healthy lifestyle tips.

Amidst all of those accomplishments and activities, Goodin operates a small online business, Belize Online Shopping Service.

Despite being the wife of PUP Belize City Councilor, Micah Goodin, Marley says that she has zero interests or involvement in her husband’s work or politics on a whole.

Goodin says that as a humanitarian she does not view society through political lenses.

She loves all people and is committed to serving humanity.
