By Aaron Humes: Some two-and-a-half years after its hearings ended in December 2017, the Chairman of the Senate Special Select Committee, Senator Aldo Salazar, this morning tabled the final report of the Committee on Immigration, 2011-2013, as a Sessional Paper at the meeting of the Senate in Belmopan.
The report is about 160 pages long, supported by 2,000 pages of documents.
Chairman Salazar completed the first draft of the report five months ago after some pressure and handed it over to his fellow Senators on the Committee – Dr. Carla Barnett representing the Government; Michel Chebat, representing the Opposition and supplanting Eamon Courtenay; Ashley Rocke representing the churches; Mark Lizarraga representing the business community; and Elena Smith representing trade unions and civil society.
There were reports that today’s report would have represented the minority, i.e. the Government, because more time had been requested by the social partners for review, but their consent was finally obtained on Tuesday. The Opposition appears to disagree.
We will have more later on.
