CWU responds to allegations of vandalism

Posted: Friday, July 24, 2020. 8:48 am CST.

By BBN Staff: The Christian Workers Union (CWU) has vehemently rejected the accusation made by the Port of Belize Limited (PBL) that its members vandalized property during their protest on Wednesday.

Responding to a statement issued by the PBL, the CWU said that the port is attempting to distort the reality of their peaceful protest and their subsequent brutalization by police which has garnered national condemnation and resulted in the transfer of several officers from the Police Department’s Gang Suppression Unit (GSU).

“Even more outrageously, PBL claims, without providing any evidence, vandalizing of its equipment and installations. Not content with the bad faith, disrespect and injustice with which it has treated CWU and our Members, on whose backs and labours the Port has survived and thrived, PBL has now resorted to deflection and denial, in the vain hope to tarnish the good name of CWU,” the union said.

The CWU added that, given the abuse the employees endered, the PBL should apologize publicly to all the affected employees and use the opportunity at hand to do right by them by completing new collective bargaining agreements for stevedores and staff.
