Commissioner of Police: Curfew will not be used to stifle the media

Posted: Wednesday, October 28, 2020. 9:17 am CST.

By BBN Staff: The National Oversight Committee (NOC) has agreed to recommend to cabinet an election night curfew beginning at 8 pm on November 11th and ending at 5 am the following day.

That curfew will serve to lessen large gatherings and avoid the further spread of COVID-19.

It is a long and arduous day for the media as well beginning early morning at the polls and ending after the counting to keep Belizeans abreast of the situation.

Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams has assured that the curfew will not be used to stifle the media.

“And may I emphatically state that the media is a very important part of our democracy and there is no way that the curfew is going to be used to stifle the media, we believe that something as important as an election, the media needs to be out to ensure that they report accurately to their viewers as well as to act as a check and balance to ensure that there is nothing unscrupulous being done by anyone within, during the election process,” Williams said.

Williams said that while the police are unable to visit each house for election night watch parties, it will alleviate the large gatherings of political supporters on the street.

He also urges all voters to cast their votes and return home and wait for the results of the election.
