By Aaron Humes: School? Vacation? Once they were mutually exclusive, but these are not ordinary days, and learning of any kind has become extraordinary as well.

Hence the portmanteau “schoolcation” – going out on the road for practical experience, and a break for Mom and Dad, while still learning remotely.

The Daily Beast says, “The pandemic has turned many parents into teachers and made distance learning a challenge for the whole family. It’s especially difficult for those who may still be able to go to their office and be away from home to supervise, or when the responsibility for homeschooling rests on a parent who may also be juggling from home. The stress is enormous. A new national survey of US workers by Eagle Hill Research found that 65 percent of employees with children in distance learning situations experience burnout.”

And if this is all sounding like a promotion for a Belizean resort that offers this sort of thing, you’d be right.

The Turtle Inn, in Placencia Village, Stann Creek District, is part of the Family Coppola Hideaways Resorts with the “Coppola Curriculum”. Three to four hours a day, children of all ages enjoy science, art, language, adventure, culinary, cultural, and service activities. This can include anything from bird counting by species, organic horticulture, wood carving, tree planting, Creole and Spanish lessons, PADI certification, story reading for local school children, tortilla making and guacamole preparation, and more. Increase the cool factor over time in the rainforest, waterfalls, and Mayan ruins. A pool garden view cottage starts at US$329 per night. The Coppola curriculum costs US$150 per student per day.

Families have spoken of the restlessness and stress associated with keeping rambunctious youngsters focused on learning while active, especially those in younger grades.

The Turtle Inn is listed among several American and Mexican cities and properties that are close to places of interest and learning from California to Florida to South Carolina.

And indeed, we’re all never too old to learn.
