Benque Viejo Mayor and community mourns the loss of twin doctors

By BBN Staff: Belize is still reeling from the loss of twin doctors Kevin and Kenneth Guerra, who lost their lives just one day apart from COVID-19. While many countrywide reflect on the loss of two frontline workers who dedicated their lives to helping Belize right up until their passing, the Mayor and residents of Benque Viejo del Carmen mourn the loss of two of their own, who grew up in the municipality and spent their lives making their hometown proud.

Benque Viejo Mayor Marconi Sosa issued a heartfelt message on the Benque Viejo Town Council’s Facebook page this morning, recounting how the brothers were active in sports throughout their early childhood and high school years. Sosa coached the Mount Carmel Primary School basketball team and noted that both brothers helped bring the team a national championship back in 2000.

“Today, we have sadly lost two great men. They were dedicated and loving sons, husbands and fathers, brothers, uncles and cousins – two Belizean doctors…two great irreplaceable role models and friends who brought happiness to wherever they went. These young men made history in Benque Viejo in the sports discipline of football and basketball, at a given point of their lives,” Sosa said.

Kevin Guerra died on Saturday, December 12, while Kenneth Guerra died today. Both brothers were intubated at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital’s COVID-19 unit. They join another 190 Belizeans who have lost their lives to the pandemic since March.
