PM Briceno responds to rumor that public officers’ salaries will be cut by 20%

Posted: Friday, February 5, 2021. 1:28 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Prime Minister John Briceno has confirmed that the Government of Belize has no intention of reducing salaries for public servants.

Briceno, addressing the issue today after a news article published by the opposition-owned newspaper, The Guardian, purported that GOB was preparing to cut salaries for public servants by 20 percent.

“After they plundered and wrecked the Belizean economy they should be ashamed of even opening their mouths. This is an absolute lie! We have no such plans. Presently we are consulting with our social partners and unions on how best we can close this $500 million deficit the UDP left. Now more than ever we all need to be responsible and work together to put Belize back on a financially sustainable path,” Briceno said.

The article and a purported letter from the Belize Business Bureau, now learned to be fake, raised major concerns this morning, causing some trade unions to consider mobilizing if the salary reductions turned out to be true.
