By Aaron Humes: Cypriot-Belizean Johny El-Zein is the latest recruit to the National Football Team, the Jaguars, as they pursue a World Cup berth in 2022.
Born to a Belizean father in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, he was from a young age scouted by and developed by the football academy of well-known English Premier League team, Manchester United.
He has since played for a Dubai All-Star team in a seven-a-side league and for three first division teams in Cyprus. He is known as an attacking midfielder and playmaker, and is described as being fast, strong and quick-thinking. Most importantly, he says he will be honoured to play for Belize.
Zein, as he is also known, is part of an effort to find Belizean players outside of Belize to bolster the local core as the Jaguars seek out a berth in the next World Cup in Qatar, or perhaps on North American turf in 2026.
