Chief of World Health Organization pays tribute to 115,000 fallen health workers at World Health Assembly

By Zoila Palma: At the opening of the World Health Assembly in Geneve on Monday, the chief of the World Health Organization, Adhanom Ghebreyesus paid tribute to the 115,000 health care workers who lost their lives fighting the COVID-19 pandemic.

Director-General Ghebreyesus said the world’s health and care workers have stood in the breach between life and death for nearly 18 months.

He said they have saved countless lives and fought for others who, despite their best efforts, slipped away.

In addition, the WHO chief said that the number of infections and deaths has decreased for the last 3 weeks but cautioned that the world remains in a dangerous situation.

“We must be very clear: the pandemic is not over, and it will not be over until and unless the transmission is controlled in every last country,” he stated.

He also spoke about the inequity in the delivery of COVID-19 vaccines and noted that over 75% of vaccine doses had been administered in only 10 countries.
