2018 Poverty Study: poverty rate 52 percent

By Aaron Humes: How many Belizeans are poor – that is, unable to maintain a healthy standard of living?

The latest study, conducted in 2018, finds that more than 52 percent live in poverty – that is, unable to meet the basic costs of food and therefore survival. This is an increase of 11 percent from the last study in 2009, but fewer persons live in critical situations or indigence – the figure fell from 16 percent to 9 percent.

Poverty has fallen in urban areas but conversely rose in rural areas.

Toledo’s rate of poverty and indigence rose significantly while Corozal saw a 11 percent reduction on the poverty rate.

Poverty almost equally affects male and female, and more greatly affects Maya households. The larger the household, the more it is likely to be indigent, the study also found, with extended households most affected. Older persons are greatly affected with 43 percent poor and 10 percent indigent.

Much more to follow.
