By Benjamin Flowers: The National Student Union of Belize (NSUB) is giving the country’s youth a space where they can express themselves about issues that are affecting them with the upcoming “Elephant in the Room” podcast.

Ashley Longford, Director of Communications for the NSUB explained that the podcast, set to air its first episode on Saturday, December 4, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., was deliberately named to emphasize its purpose – to address issues that are blatantly affecting Belizean youths but are not being widely discussed. The podcast will be hosted by Gwen Galvez and Naomi Sanchez, with special guest Kristcha DeGuerre (Kay Deg).

DeGuerre is a PhD candidate at the University at Albany’s School of Social Welfare specializing in research with gang-involved women in Belize. She is also an international social worker specializing in gang-involved youth, mental health, child maltreatment, and juvenile justice in Belize.

The topic for the upcoming podcast is “Gang involved youth in Belize,” chosen in light of the ongoing surge in violence that has claimed the lives of several youths this year.

“We chose it [the topic gang violence] because we know the problem is there, it’s right in front of our faces. As we turn on any Belizean news we see youths dying in front of us, being shot, being stabbed. That’s a serious problem that our nation has but we don’t talk about it, we don’t address the problem to our leaders, Longford said.

The podcast will also serve as a means to collect data on the issues raised by youths to engage government bodies, youths agencies, and the National Trade Union Congress of Belize, in an effort to take strategic action to address the issues that were raised and share ideas for solutions
