The Corozal Free Zone (CFZ) continues operating at nearly 100% with only one store closed, but with the 173 COVID-19 cases on Wednesday when 1,002 persons were tested, the Ministry of Health and Wellness is today continuing the testing of the remaining 500 persons who work there.

“Our team is on the ground there. We are doing testing and we are doing vaccination,” said Minister of Enterprise Jose Abelardo Mai, under whose portfolio the Corozal Free Zone falls.

“So far, the last report is that we are below the national average which is somewhat good news so to speak but we are continuing to test,” said Mai in reference to the 173 out of 1,002 who proved positive on Wednesday. That day the national average of people who tested positive was 25%.

But because the Corozal Free Zone is an enclosed work area, the Ministries of Enterprise and Health are testing everyone who works at the zone.

“There might be more cases but we’re taking all necessary precautions. We are following all protocols. Whenever we find people that are infected then we send them home to isolate, to recover. We sanitize the building where they work. If there is a majority of workers, then we’re closing down the stores. So, we’re taking all the necessary precautions.”

After Wednesday’s initial testing, one store out of 200 was closed, according to the Corozal Free Zone Chief Executive Officer Neri Ramirez. The workers from that store and all the others who were positive and were sent home should return in seven days.

“After seven days they will have to come back with a negative PCR test first. Secondly, they have to sanitize the store and then they will get a certificate that they can open again,” Ramirez added.

In the case of stores having one or two persons positive, Ramirez said those workers have to be isolated but the stores will continue operating with the remaining staff.

Ramirez said the testing of the 1,002 on Wednesday went up to 6:00 pm, so Friday they expect to finish by 3:00 pm.
