By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Fifteen sheep and goat farmers attended a Sheep Management Field Day in Paraiso, Corozal District, on Wednesday, March 2.

The Field Day held at the farm of Benito Vasquez was organized by the Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund (ICDF) Breeding Sheep and Goat Production and Guidance System Enhancement Project (Sheep Project Phase II) in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE).
Extension Officers and other interested parties from the Corozal District were also present.

The Sheep Management Field Day is in fulfillment of the Sheep Project Second Phase’s commitment to have farmers teaching farmers.

“Benito Vasquez is a well-respected sheep farmer and demonstrated his skills and abilities during the event,” said MAFSE adding that the field day included demonstrations in feeding management, sheep barn management, breed demonstration, record keeping, and meat cuts preparation.

Project Specialist Eason Huang reiterated the continued support of the Breeding Sheep and Goat Production and Guidance System Enhancement Project to Belizean farmers through theoretical and practical training and educational outreach.

The Sheep Project Second Phase which has a US$3,000,000 budget was signed in March 2020. The project is being implemented during a four-year period.

Its main objective is to assist Belizean farmers in further improving the quality of their sheep and goats. The project is also conducting “a market study and value chain analysis to promote consumption and market penetration for sheep and goat products” and is expected “to strengthen the sheep and goat traceability system to improve value chain efficiencies”.
