By Rubén Morales Iglesias: If you went to Lee Chee (or any other restaurant) and got your fried chicken with fried rice instead of fries, it’s because there is a potato shortage in the country at the moment.
But the Minister of Agriculture, Food security, and Enterprise Jose Abelardo Mai said potato importation is being allowed to alleviate the shortage.
“We are now out of local potatoes. We are going to import fresh potatoes.
To compound the matter there is a shortage of potato fries in the world market as well,” said Minister Mai.
“We have right now authorized the importation of fries. Of course, that has to be managed,” he said.
Mai said that Belize had a very poor potato season because 60 to 70 percent of the crop was lost to a disease that apparently came in the imported seeds.
Minister Mai said he expects the imported potatoes should be in the local market within the next two weeks.
