John Saldivar tells Government to condemn his designation as corrupt Minister; begs for public support in Belize and US

By Benjamin Flowers: Former United Democratic Party leader John Saldivar is looking for support to combat the recent designation made by the United States Department of State that he was a corrupt public official.

Saldivar said that, under US law, the US government does not have to provide him with any evidence or justification for the designation, which he feels is unfair. Saldivar said that it is his human right to know what the accusations against him are, and took to social media in an attempt to rally supporters to his cause.

“I call on the Belize government to condemn this highhanded behavior and blatant interference into our political affairs. I also call on the fair-minded members of the United States Congress to review this blatant abuse and miscarriage of justice by its government officials here in Belize,” Saldivar said. “I also call on Belizeans in the diaspora to forward my case to their Congress person to initiate a review of this unfair and unfounded designation.”

He maintains that he operated at the highest level of integrity during his time as a public official and stressed that no evidence can be produced to the contrary.

On Tuesday, it was announced that Saldivar was designated as a corrupt official under the U.S. Department of State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs Appropriations Act, 2022 (SOFOP) Section 7031(c). The State Department spokesperson Ned Price said that Saldivar was ассuѕеd оf “ѕіgnіfісаnt соrruрtіоn”, ѕресіfісаllу, ассерtіng brіbеѕ “fоr thе іmрrореr асquіѕіtіоn оf Веlіzеаn іmmіgrаtіоn dосumеntѕ аnd [іntеrfеrіng] іn рublіс рrосеѕѕеѕ fоr hіѕ реrѕоnаl bеnеfіt durіng hіѕ tеnurе аѕ а gоvеrnmеnt оffісіаl.”
