By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Ecuador had a sensational start on Sunday winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup opener 2-0 over Qatar at the Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor, Qatar.
Captain Enner Valencia scored Ecuador’s two goals converting the first one off a penalty kick in the 16th minute. Valencia, cool as a cucumber, placed the ball to the right, beating goalkeeper Saad Alsheeb. Valencia hit again off a power header in the 31st minute.
Valencia is now Ecuador’s lead scorer in World Cups with five, two more than Agustín Delgado.
Today’s was the first time a World Cup’s first goal has been scored from the penalty spot.
Valencia could have had a hat trick, but a video assisted referee (VAR) review called it off due to an offside.
This was the first time the hosts have lost a World Cup opening match. Out of the 22 World Cups up to date, the hosts have only played in eleven of them.
