International News: FBI chief says TikTok is threat to national security in U.S.

Posted: Monday, December 5, 2022. 9:55 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Director of the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Chris Wray says that the Chinese-owned video app, TikTok is a threat to national security, Time reports.

Wray says that the dancing app “doesn’t share our values” and could “manipulate content.”

TikTok which is owned by Chinese tech company, ByteDance has over 1 billion global users.

Wray says that China’s ruling Communist Party could use the app to influence through TikTok’s recommendation algorithm and by collecting user data or controlling software for espionage purposes.

“All of these things are in the hands of a government that doesn’t share our values and that has a mission that’s very much at odds with what’s in the best interests of the United States,” Wray said that this should concern the U.S.

In 2018, TikTok became the most downloaded app in the U.S. and concerns in the U.S. began since then.

“The Chinese government has shown a willingness to steal Americans’ data on a scale that dwarfs any other,” Wray added.

In 2020, former President, Donald Trump also expressed concerns about the app and set a ban on TikTok to finding an American buyer if the app wanted to continue operating in the U.S.

But that ban was revoked in 2021 and President Joe Biden has given an executive order to investigate apps connected to foreign adversaries.
