By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On January 5, 2023, a closing ceremony was held for the “Banana Fiber Training” in Benque Viejo del Carmen.
The training was conducted under the Project titled “Enhancing the Economic Empowerment of Women in Belize in the COVID-19 Post-Pandemic Era: Technical Assistance for Women’s Employment, Entrepreneurship, and Financial Inclusion”.
This project was funded by the Taiwan ICDF and cooperated between the Governments of Belize and Taiwan.
Twenty-five women completed the training and learnt how to turn raw banana fiber into useful resources and develop a source of income by creating and producing beautiful handicrafts as high-quality merchandise.
The entrepreneurs can now sell their handicrafts and build a source of income.
Each participant was awarded a Certificate of completion.
Attendees at the ceremony included Taiwan’s Ambassador to Belize, David Kuan-Chou Chien, Area Representative of Cayo West, Jorge Espat, CEO of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Immigration, Amalia Mai and Chief of the Taiwan Technical Mission in Belize, Robert Pan.
Ambassador Chien, CEO Mai, and Espat congratulated the participants and reiterated the importance of women’s empowerment in rebuilding the economy of the country.
They also discussed further strengthening the meaningful friendship between Belize and Taiwan during their remarks.
“As Taiwan is a faithful and reliable ally to Belize, the Taiwan Embassy will continue to work closely with the Government of Belize to further assist the female entrepreneurs of MSMEs in Belize for the benefit of Belizean people,” the Taiwan Embassy said.
