International News: Taiwan’s President gives up 1 month’s salary for Turkey relief efforts

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, Taiwan’s presidential office announced that Taiwan’s President, Tsai Ing-wen and Vice President, William Lai will donate 1 month’s salary for Turkey relief efforts following the devastating 7.8 earthquake, Reuters report.

The President and Vice President “hope to do their part to help Turkey rebuild its homeland as soon as possible”, the presidential office said.

Turkey has no diplomatic relations with Taiwan but maintain de factor embassy there.

In 2022, Tsai and Lai also donated one month’s salary to aid humanitarian relief efforts for Ukraine.

President Tsai earns around T$400,000 ($13,300 US) a month.

The death toll from the earthquake has passed 15,000.

Members of the international community continue to assist Turkey with search and rescue teams.
