Belize, Central American Integration System (SICA) push for improved tilapia and snapper farming, publish aquaculture manuals

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Ministry of Agriculture’s Aquaculture Unit and Central American Fisheries and Aquaculture Sector Organization (OSPESCA) held a tilapia and snapper farming workshop at the University of Belize Central Farm Campus and presented aquaculture manuals.

According to Miguel Sosa, Aquaculture Supervisor of the Aquaculture Unit in the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE), the Aquaculture Unit has been working with OSPESCA, an arm of the Central American Integration System (SICA), on the Value Chain Integration in Fisheries and Aquaculture Project (INCAVPESCA) that involves the development and publishing of Tilapia and Pacific Ocean Snapper farming manuals.

As its name implies, OSPESCA, which is based in El Salvador, has been working on the promotion of fisheries and aquaculture in the region, and over the last year they have concentrated their efforts on the Tilapia and the Pacific Ocean Snapper in Honduras, Guatemala, and Belize.

Now that the manuals have been completed, OSPESCA presented them today to students from the University of Belize, fish farmers, and representatives from the shrimp farms who participated in the workshop. The INCAVPESCA Regional Technical Coordinator Tania Norori and the SICA/OSPESCA Projects’ Regional Administrator Alicia Velasco were present for the launch of the manuals. For now these manuals are available in Spanish but should be translated into English.

Sosa said Ospesca asked MAFSE to identify a university that could benefit from the manuals. Hence, UB’s presence at the workshop.

The intention is for the manuals to be used in the SICA countries, that’s Central America and the Dominican Republic.

“The manuals are a product of the Value Chain Integration in Fisheries and Agriculture project INCAVPESCA,” MAFSE said in a social media post.
