The Premier League of Belize (PLB) announced on Friday night that all their final regular season games will be played on Saturday.

“All 3 PLB games will be playing tomorrow at 7:30 pm,” the PLB message said.

“Altitude FC vs Verdes FC.  Police/Benque United FC vs San Pedro Pirates FC. Progresso FC vs Port Layola FC. Wagiya SC vs International FC will play at 4:00 pm at FFB Stadium.”

The one game that was slated for Sunday, the Progresso vs Port Layola match was the one holdup. That’s because the lights at the People’s Stadium were not good enough for night games, but this week the National Sports Council decided to assist the PLB and fixed the problem. However, it took until late last night for the work to be completed.

According to PLB sources, the PLB purchased the lights and the necessary fixtures.

Now, the three games that have playoff implications will all be played at the same time on Saturday. That way no team has an edge over the others.

“After many years in the dark, the People’s Stadium now shines brightly! A lot of work went in getting the pitch prepared on short notice but with unity and teamwork the job was accomplished,”” Progresso FC said in a social media post at 8:13 pm on Friday night.

“All thanks to the big collaboration between Progresso FC , the Premier League of Belize, National sports Council and B.E.L who all went the extra mile to get this done today under the blazing sun.”

A little later, at 8:57 pm they announced their match for Saturday.

“Hottest game of the season is happening right here at the People’s stadium now on a Saturday night!!!!! Come watch the Belizean team on the rekindled lights of the stadium battle it out!!!,” Progresso said.

“Last game of the season!!! It’s do or die!!! 5 teams can still qualify for playoffs!! There’s no room for errors!! It’s a must win!!!”

Progresso (23 points) only need a draw to ensure their spot in the semifinals. Port (22) must win, though a draw would be enough if Benque Viejo United lose.

Benque (21), therefore, must beat the San Pedro Pirates at the Edmund Marshalleck Stadium in Benque Viejo del Carmen for them to earn a spot in the playoffs. Like Progresso, the Pirates (23) qualify with a draw.

Champions Altitude (19), have the least of possibilities. They must beat their archenemies, leaders Verdes (30), who already secured a spot in the playoffs, at the Michael Ashcroft Stadium in Independence. However, the victory will not be enough for Altitude as they will also depend on both Port and Benque Viejo United losing to get in.

As to the Wagiya (3) vs Internacional-Bandits (2), that game has no bearing on the playoffs, but both teams are trying to avoid finishing last. The match was also changed from Sunday to Saturday and moved from Dangriga to the FFB Stadium in Belmopan. The match will be played there at 4:00 pm.
