Verdes not alone in celebration; Guatemala, Panama, Costa Rica, Honduras, Mexico have new football champions

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Verdes have been celebrating since Sunday their winning the Premier League of Belize Closing Championship and their qualification to the Concacaf League. The Green Machine triumphed 1-0 and 2-1 over the San Pedro Pirates on Wednesday and Sunday, but they are not alone in celebration.

Tigres of the Nuevo León Autonomous University of Monterrey in Mexico are celebrating their eighth championship. On Sunday night, Tigres overcame a 2-0 deficit to beat Chivas of Guadalajara 3-2 in a highly intense final. The first final had gone scoreless.

Xelajú, also known as Chivos (they use the masculine name for goats as opposed to their Mexican counterparts), are the new Guatemalan champions. On Saturday, Xelajú demolished Antigua 3-0 after falling 2-0 in the first leg of the Finals.

In Honduras, Olimpia scored an injury time goal to win the second final 3-2 over Olancho in a game in which they had found themselves on the losing end for quite a while. The first final ended 2-2. The title is Olimpia’s 36th, double that of archrivals Motagua.

In Panama, Club Atlético Independiente, better known as CAIPanamá, triumphed 3-1 over Tauro in a one-game final. CAI are back-to-back champions.

Saprissa are the back-to-back champions in Costa Rica as well. Los Morados (the Purple Team) overcame a 1-0 loss away in game one and beat Liga Deportiva Alajuelense 3-1 at home to win 3-2 on aggregate.

In Nicaragua, Real Estelí won the championship on a 3-0 aggregate over Diriangén a week earlier on Sunday, May 21. The first game had been scoreless.

El Salvador cancelled their playoffs and final series after the stampede at the Cuscatlán Stadium which claimed the lives of 12 fans.
