By BBN Staff: Today, September 19, marks the 5th anniversary of the passing of the father of the nation, the Rt. Hon. George Cadle Price.

In commemoration, as has become a tradition, members of the People’s United Party (PUP) and the wider public have gathered at the Lord Ridge Cemetery in Belize City, where Price was buried, to lay a wreath on his tomb.

PUP Leader John Briceno as well as other PUP seniors are expected to highlight his many contributions to the country and the party.

Price, of course, is credited as being the father of the nation and leading Belize to Independence in 1981. He served as the country’s Premier under British rule and became the country’s first Prime Minister after Independence.

He was known to travel to remote parts of the country visiting people and getting to know how Belizeans were living and understanding their needs. He dominated politics until his retirement in 1996. He entered politics in 1947 as a member of the Belize City Council. In 1950 he co-founded the PUP, which he led for four decades.

In his earlier life Price had been studying to become a priest but felt a calling to public service and eventually left to pursue a political career.
