By BBN Staff: Polling stations opened countrywide at 7 am today as Belizeans participate in the historic national referendum on whether or not to take Guatemala’s claim to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for final settlement.

Area representative for Cayo North Omar Figueroa told us that voter turnout in Cayo North is expected to be high.

“ The government and the party believes that a yes vote is in the best interest of the country. So we have reached out to voters for a Yes vote and we are offering to bring them out to the polls if they need to come out. We have encouraged them and we have our people out here working. I think the voter turnout will, in the end, be high because of the re-registration. The folks that we have talked to are convinced that a yes vote will be in the best interest of all,” Figueroa said.

Unofficial reports from Cayo North indicate that about 450 voters have voted in polling area 73 at Sacred Heart Primary school in San Ignacio.
