Briceño: Availability and distribution of food ‘politicized’

Posted: Saturday, April 11, 2020. 2:13 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Accompanied by a short montage showing United Democratic Party (UDP) standard-bearers and aspirants, Leader of the Opposition John Briceño has complained that Belizeans cannot afford even the most basic food supplies at this critical time, and support to them has become politicized.

In a national statement issued late Friday in response to Prime Minister Dean Barrow, Briceño’s statement showed captured footage of his Orange Walk Central constituency rival Denny Grijalva distributing supplies that Briceño claims elsewhere he got from the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO). Also pictured are Albert area rep Tracey Taegar Panton and Freetown standard-bearer Orson Elrington, while a picture of a food bag shows a legend on the side reading ‘FABER 2020’, presumably referring to Education Minister and Collet area rep Patrick Faber.

The P.U.P. argues that it has advocated for non-political distribution through the Belize Defence Force and Belize Red Cross Society and that the political interference is ‘unacceptable.’
