BBN’s Woman of the Year- Sharon Matola!

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Founder and Director of the Belize Zoo, Sharon Matola has been chosen as Breaking Belize News’ Woman of the Year 2020!

Matola is a biologist and environmentalist from the United States.

She is also the founder of the Tropical Education Center.

In 1983, Matola began to protect native animals that had been used in a wildlife documentary in Belize.

Throughout the years, Matola has strived to bring awareness to Belize’s wildlife and their habitats.

Some of the many programs at the Belize Zoo include the Belize Harpy Eagle Restoration program, the jaguar rehabilitation program, Saving wildlands for wildlife program among others.

In 2019, Matola was honored by the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens for her conservation efforts.

During this year, just as how the COVID-19 pandemic affected the world and Belizeans, it affected our friends at the zoo.

Donors such as Lord Ashcroft extended a helping hand to the best little zoo in the world.

In October of this year, Matola hosted a 1-hour dash for Belizeans to be able to contribute and help feed over 200 animals that live at The Belize Zoo.

The Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center has been proudly serving Belize for over 37 years and over 86,000 people visit the best little zoo in the world annually.

For her extensive contributions to Belize’s wildlife, conservation and environmental programs, BBN salutes Matola for her arduous work in Belize.
