By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Police not granting permission for demonstration based on the state of emergency in Belize City is ‘bulls**t’ and the UDP is going ahead with a demonstration against fuel prices on Tuesday, said United Democratic Party Chairman Michael Peyrefitte in a virtual press conference on Monday.

“We are going to try to find a way of sending a message without breaking the law and still do it in the form of a protest that cannot be one that would technically require permission from the police department,” said Peyrefitte.

“There are many ways to protest quite legally without the need of permission and that is what we would attempt to do.

When asked why the UDP is doing a protest when it’s facing internal challenges, Peyrefitte said one doesn’t impede the other.

“That doesn’t mean you can’t continue to do your job as an organization,” Peyrefitte said.

“We can walk and chew gum. We can fix our internal issues and at the same time function as Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition. So, that’s what we’re doing. We have been getting calls to send a message by way of a protest or something to indicate that the population is not happy with the People’s United Party. They’ve broken promises and the fact that ‘no everybady di win’.

Peyrefitte said that the Opposition must do its job.

“We have to set an example as the opposition because that’s our duty and that’s our job and if we are not given permission to protest, well that is another reason to protest. Because we should not be muffled. We cannot be muffled. And that is another reason why the Commissioner of Police should resign because he has gone from police to politician,” Peyrefitte said.
