Audrey Matura continues to root for Belize Powerlifting Association and athletes

By Audrey Matura: I may not be the most liked person and I may be attacked by the critics …. But I will promote any positive venture my kids involved in!

I used my FB platform to bring much needed attention to the needs of the athletes who travelled to Panama when they were low on funds. Whether you liked it or not, after my call to action many in the private sector stepped forward and donated money. This made that trip more financially viable to the athletes. You may not like my style but it gets results when all else fails and by then all else had failed.

Prior to that the first in the private sector to willingly lend support were the sponsors of the raffle. Ian Anderson donated a two night stay at Caves Branch … a place really nice and worth visiting. Banana Bank Lodge, Belize another lovely vacation spot donated horseback riding for two and Upside Down Tours and Hummingbird Furnishings also answered the call to action. We must not take them for granted because when others said no, they lent support without hesitation.

I glad to note that from the cabinet briefing, finally the government after much noise and calling them out took the first step in the right direction to recognize the athletes and their achievements in their cabinet briefing for today 22August 2022! You know how many sporting teams go away fully sponsored and bring back nothing…. Not even recognition. This team excelled and placed in the top 5 at all times. That is no easy feat!

So John Briceno this is the first step in the right direction. Now I asking that the Belize Powerlifting Association get the much needed funding to attend all the competitions to which they have been invited. And for God-sake get them enough uniforms for them to represent abroad in our national colours and under our Belizean flag.

The president, Khakid Usher, has his heart set in entering a bid to host the 2025 NAPF 22nd regional championship in Belize. I hope BTB helps to sponsor so that we win that bid and bring some sports tourism to our shores …. There is also financial return for our county in this.

Be reminded that the raffle is tomorrow so you must get your tickets in.

Finally they also getting the much needed media attention. OYE was the first to host them this morning and tomorrow (Tuesday 23 August, 2022) they will be on More FM in the morning show with Sharmane Garbutt Garcia!

I love that they getting much needed exposure and I hope that Belizeans of all age range are inspired to take up the challenge to powerlift and grow the sport.
