United Democratic Party supporting flood victims through clothing and food drive

By Benjamin Flowers: The United Democratic Party is calling on Belizeans to support those affected by severe flooding through a clothing drive.

UDP Secretary General Juliette Timbrel told Breaking Belize News (BBN) today that the party has begun accepting donations of clothes, canned food, bedding, and other items to support flood victims at marked pickup points across the country, beginning in Benque Viejo, San Ignacio/Santa Elena (SISE), and Belize City.

“We saw the seriousness of the situation in the videos and pictures sent to us,” Timbrell said. “I said I can’t imagine how it must feel losing everything in a flood and I know I would want help in a situation like that. So I came up with this initiative and the party readily supported it.”

Arlette Comez, Public Relations Officer for the UDP also spoke with our newsroom, explaining that the severity of the situation is a call for Belizeans to stand united so that those affected can get the help they need. Donations in SISE can be dropped off at the San Ignacio Town Hall. Those needing to arrange pickup can contact Mayor Earl Trapp at 804-2035.

Donations in Benque Viejo can be dropped off at the corner of Victoria and Kennedy Streets. The contact to arrange pickup of donations is UDP Cayo West Secretary Carlos Cortez, who can be reached at 635-1937.

“We really want to leave the politics out of this,” Gomez said. “Right now, people need help, especially at a time like this. There’s so much going on we still have COVID around, so right now we really need to focus on the importance of helping one another.”

Donations in Belize City can be dropped off at the UDP headquarters on Youth for the Future Drive. Those needing to arrange pickup are urged to call 227-2576.
