Evangelical churches take issue with Minister of Home Affairs over marijuana industry

Posted: Thursday, December 31, 2020. 11:11 am CST.

By BBN Staff: Today, the National Evangelical Association of Belize (NEAB) said that it has serious concerns about comments made by Minister of Home Affairs and New Growth Industries Kareem Musa, regarding the church’s need to embrace the marijuana industry in Belize.

“We find this shockingly offensive that in a national pandemic crisis, he would choose to put that issue forward in the “first 100 days.” We state with greatest disappointment that the Hon. Minister’s philosophy of mere “economic benefit” while disregarding moral boundaries is a flawed philosophy that has plunged nations into the throes of corruption, wickedness, and darkness,” NEAB said.  “That rationale can see “economic benefit” in human  and drug trafficking, drug planes, cocaine, heroin, and illegal arms trading – does that mean we  should embrace those “industries” also? Belize already has a serious substance abuse issue, and to suggest that legalizing and profiting off a marijuana industry will eliminate gang turf battles and murders is severely misguided.”

NEAB correlated the increased reports of drug plane landings with the 2017 decriminalization of marijuana. The organization also noted that the former government administration had promised to implement a ticketing system to accompany the decriminalization, but never followed through.

NEAB also raised the concern that establishing a marijuana industry in Belize could  further degrade Belize’s relationship with international banks and have an adverse effect on the economy.

“Honest business people doing legitimate business presently cannot access international  funds because of Belize’ non-compliance. This will make that worse! We urge in the strongest way possible that Government exercise intelligence and creativity in  researching a vast array of other beneficial industries for our nation, and not marijuana. Blessed is  the nation who does what’s right in God’s eyes, not the nation who endangers their soul for “economic  benefit,” NEAB added.
