By Rubén Morales Iglesias: As of today, Monday, August 23, 2021, no persons nor business establishments, except those holding a restaurant license, are allowed to sell liquor after six in the evening according to New Statutory Instrument (SI) No. 92 of 2021.
“We have mandated now that liquor should not be sold in any stores after six o’clock in the evenings. You can go to the restaurant and get your beer and get a drink, but you can’t go anywhere else to go and buy rum to go and drink,” said Prime Minister John Briceño on the Love F.M. Morning Show last week before the new SI came out.
“No person shall sell liquor during the hours of six o’clock p.m. to four a.m. of the following morning,” says the SI that comes into effect today. However, as the Prime Minister clarified, the SI says the “sub-regulation shall not apply to establishments holding a restaurant license”.
Last week, Prime Minister John Briceño announced that his government decided to implement this decision as a number of big stores were allowing vehicles to park next to their businesses, purchase beer by the cases, and consume liquor on the spot.
