By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The National Amateur Women’s League (NAWL) will have new champions tonight. Who do you bet on: the Sagitun GIRLZ from Independence/Mango Creek or the San Pedro Pirates from Ambergris Caye? Both appear evenly matched.
Now that they meet again to determine the NAWL A championship, who do you bet on?
Both finished the regular season with similar records and were tied in points. Only goal-differential gave the Sagitun GIRLZ the edge, placing them second ahead of third place San Pedro Pirates.
During the regular season, the Sagitun GIRLZ won their first encounter 4-2 at the Ambergris Stadium in San Pedro on Saturday, April 23.
Surma Alfaro canned the opener in the 17th minute for the Sagitun GIRLZ, but San Pedro evened the score in the 53’ on a goal by Tamara Baptist.
Karisha Coe sent Sagitun ahead again in the 60’ but Baptist tied it again one minute later.
However, Coe completed her brace in the 73’ and Sabrina Eiley put the icing on the cake for the 4-2 Sagitun GIRLZ victory in the 84’.
But two months later, they played to a 1-1 draw at the Michael Ashcroft Stadium in Independence on Saturday, June 18. The San Pedro Pirates were much more determined and better driven. Eiley put the Sagitun GIRLZ ahead in the 10’ but Baptist leveled the action in the 40’.
Tonight, they have another go at it, but this time it’s for all the marbles. Having left national subchamps Rumberas and national champs Jewel Fury strewn on the wayside, the Sagitun GIRLZ and the San Pedro Pirates respectively, will determine who the new Belizean NAWL A football champions are.
As they say, may the best team win.
The NAWL A Final is scheduled for 6:00 pm at the FFB Stadium in Belmopan, barring extra-time is not needed to determine the NAWL B championship between Bay City and Wagiya SC United which kicks off at 4:00 pm. If that were to happen, which the FFB considers highly unlikely, the game would be delayed.
