Businessman stabbed and robbed in downtown Belize City – suspect being sought

Posted: Saturday, January 28, 2023. 5:05 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: An Indian businessman was attacked in downtown Belize City on Saturday morning and left hospitalized, but police were able to nab at least one of his assailants.

According to police, 34-year-old Deepak Rupuchand Katariya of Water Lane was leaving Sky Shop at the corner of Cemetery Road and Euphrates Avenue after taking orders and was heading back to his parked vehicle when two men approached.

One of the men, dressed in camouflage and a cap, held him in a chokehold while the other stabbed him several times in the body. They then stole his bag containing various electronic equipment before attempting to flee in a Chevrolet Equinox van parked on Mosul Street.

However, Police Precinct One Support Team who were in the area intercepted them, and one of the suspects exited the vehicle from the rear driver-side door as it sped toward Vernon Street. He attempted to flee on foot but was detained behind the former Batty’s Bus Terminal on Mosul Street, carrying the bag with the stolen items, and positively identified. Police say they also obtained the weapon allegedly used in the incident, a ten-inch dagger with a wooden handle on Vernon Street, and are looking for another suspect known to them.

Katariya is listed in a critical but stable condition at the operating theatre at Belize Medical Associates. Police investigations continue.
